Everything you need to know about a hypnotherapy session
What is hypnosis?
When hypnotised, we are said to enter a 'trance state'. We
experience a highly focused state of attention where our range of
environmental stimuli is narrowed down to the point of a single focus.
Stage hypnotists often appear to have this magical control over
their subjects, but in truth it is the subject who is always in
complete control. Some fear they will lose consciousness but again
this is far from the truth. When we day dream we experience a trance
state, albeit a light one, yet we do not lose consciousness.
In fact if the hypnotist were to leave the room whilst a subject
was lying quietly in hypnosis, the subject would eventually awake as
if they had just experienced a few minutes relaxation. We experience
hypnotic states every day of our life and it is an integral part of
our existence. Everybody experiences hypnosis in a different way
but will generally have feelings of complete relaxation, a calm sense
of peacefulness and perhaps sensations of heaviness or lightness.
When we are hypnotised we are able to directly communicate with
the subconscious and effectively re-program our response patterns.
Combined together, hypnosis and therapy forms one of the most
powerful psychotherapeutic interventions to help bring about
life changing experience.
what is hypnotherapy?
Combining the art of hypnosis with therapy creates a very
powerful alternative to general counseling and traditional
psychotherapy. The major difference to these alternatives is direct
communication with the subconscious mind. The subconscious controls
every system we have, from the rate of our breathing to the beating
of our heart.
It exists to keep us out of trouble, to keep us alive and most of
the time does a pretty good job, but what happens when we develop a
symptom? Well, sometimes the subconscious mind, gets it wrong.
Sometimes a person may develop an irrational fear of flying for
example. The subconscious mistakenly perceives getting into a plane,
as immense danger.
Try as hard as you will, it would be very difficult to try and
convince yourself through sheer will power, there really wasn't
any reason to be afraid. Here lies the great advantage of
hypnotherapy. The response to the "threat" of flying is a
subconscious response. Using hypnosis, you enter a trance state,
suggestibility is increased and if the conscious critical faculty
is bypassed, the subconscious accepts suggestions carefully
constructed to achieve a desired end result.
what should I expect in therapy?
Before any therapy begins, you will be booked in for an Initial
Consultation at no charge (unless you are being seen for smoking
cessation which is a one off session lasting between 1.5 to 2 hours).
The object of this session is to provide you with a clear
understanding of hypnosis and hypnotherapy and ensure you have an
appreciation of the format of therapy. This is also a time for me
to better understand what you want to achieve from therapy and get a
more detailed explanation of the presenting problem.
Your first
session will then be booked for the following week and each
following session will occur on a weekly basis. Every session will
last around an hour and your progress will be checked and monitored as you continue your transformation towards overcoming your problems.
There are three approaches to therapy:
Suggestion based therapy:
A form of therapy utilising positive suggestions to
achieve a clear objective such as confidence building,
stopping nail biting or quitting smoking.
Solution based therapy:
The client works toward achieving a specific goal,
changing perspectives and realising solutions. This form of
therapy believes we are not slaves to our past nor is our
future pre-determined by our past. What is important is the
now and the future, a future that is both created and
negotiable.
Analytical based therapy
There are various techniques employed to facilitate
change by allowing the client to re-evaluate past
experiences. Here the understanding is that all symptoms
have a cause, typically, but not necessarily, due to events
that occurred during ones childhood. By re-evaluating the
experience, we release the attached emotion and remove any
unwanted response patterns.
I very rarely use analysis, if at all, during my sessions as I favour
the solution focused approach because of it's positivity and
ability to treat issues quickly and effectively without having to trawl
through the past.
how many sessions will I need?
Each person is different and will respond to therapy in different
ways. A person's objectives may change as other things come to light
due to a shift in our perceptions creating a change of our awareness
and experience over the course of therapy.
This may very well alter the direction of therapy as it
proceeds down another avenue.
If you choose to go ahead with hypnotherapy, we will meet on a
weekly basis. In comparison to many other therapies, a shorter time
is required to achieve the desired changes. On average I see clients
between four to six sessions but this may vary.
